Well, we tried to keep it a secret as long as we could, but to be honest, we’ve been dying to tell you about the bun we’ve got in the oven. We’ll soon be welcoming a new addition to the Google Docs & Spreadsheets family: presentations.

First of all, we want to welcome the team from Tonic Systems to Google. Tonic, which we’ve just acquired, is based in San Francisco and Melbourne, Australia. They have some great technology for presentation creation and document conversion, and it will be a great addition as we add presentation sharing and collaboration capabilities to Google Docs & Spreadsheets.

Well I had noted it before, and I think everyone has been expecting to see a presentation app. I assume its a ajax app that creates a flash presentation. That would allow it to be decently cross-platform. With presentation we would have docs, spreadsheet, email, and calendar as well as other somewhat important things like News, RSS Reader and custom Homepages. Making Google a pretty strong player in the office space.

What I’d love to see Google doing is putting together an installer and cleaning up inkscape, gimp and scribus to work nicely with each other. And they’ve have a good office design suite too. Cleaned up I definitely would suggest that over using Microsoft Publisher and in some cases it would make more sense then a number of the high priced Adobe ones. The main problem is interface issues and help currently for those open source programs. (Note 2 of the 3 of those programs are ones that Google selected to participate in “Google’s Summer of Code“)
