Thanks ImageshackBlu-Ray and DVD-HD — the two new high-def video formats that have been crippled into uselessness through ridiculous anti-copying measures — are selling so poorly that a new disc can get on the weekly top ten by selling as few as 880 copies.

While we should note that the VideoScan numbers are not all-inclusive (for example, they don’t include discs sold at Wal-Mart or some online merchants), the lower sales numbers at the bottom end of weekly list and on display elsewhere in the report (where some titles are listed as selling fewer than 200 units since inception) are certainly still a sobering reminder that both formats still have a long way to go in their shared quest to supplant standard-def DVD.

OK, I figured it wasn’t selling that well, considering that not many would buy a Playstation 3, and off hand I don’t know anyone who has gotten a Xbox 360 add-on HD-Drive. Of the 2 options though, I assumed there would be more HD-DVD sales. It just seems a better overall format. But it looks from the chart, that what little High Def Video sales there are, are being done in Blue-Ray Format. There was only 1 HD-DVD movie on that list.

Over all I have to say that it really looks like Sony… um screwed the pooch.

    Blu-ray won the format “war”.

Blu-ray has Blockbuster, Target, Wal-Mart, better technology and more studio support. Not to mention Playstation 3 as a trojan horse…

BTW, I own PS3, X-Box 360 with HD-drive and both types of discs.

  2. I think the format War is still going on. Every single movie I’ve seen advertised for release lately has been advertised in both formats. You got to the movies and more then likely you’ll see an advertisement for HD-DVD, and occasionally Blue Ray.

In a lot of ways I hope Sony will lose. But they own 4 of the major studios, so I assume it’ll be a tough fight.

  3. BTW Wired Magazine just had a post today talking about how a few different Production Companies are going to only be releasing their movies on HD-DVD. Another crack for Blue-Ray dominance.

A couple new releases coming up that will be effected by this are Shrek3 and Transformers.

different consoles should adhere to one format.

  5. I don’t think so in the long run. Then it becomes hard to add features. You hit limits. A company should be able to research ways to create a better experience, even if that means a new disc format.
