Got you to look. David Letterman is known for his work ethic in which he’s always been there on his scheduled shows. Well tonight will be different:

Adam Sandler - Image Hosted by ImageShack.usDavid Letterman has gone home sick this afternoon, forcing his CBS program to call in reinforcements from its guest list.

Adam Sandler, who had been scheduled to be the lead guest on tonight’s “Late Show With David Letterman,” was enlisted to step in as the host of the show. He taped the show early this evening after rehearsing with its writers and producers this afternoon.

It is rare for late-night hosts to miss scheduled programs, although Mr. Letterman has been forced to call in guest hosts on two previous occasions because of health conditions. He famously missed five weeks in 2000 after emergency bypass surgery. Three years later, he missed a month with a severe case of shingles.

And in a case of Mr. Letterman simply being Mr. Letterman, he decided on the spur of the moment to take a Friday off in 2003. On that occasion, Tom Arnold was pressed into service as the substitute host.

This time the situation is more mundane. Mr. Letterman has contracted a stomach virus that has been spreading throughout the New York area and is too ill to perform on tonight’s show.

Mr. Sandler was already in place to be a guest on the show. He then called in Don Cheadle to be the lead guest tonight. Mr. Cheadle is the co-star in the movie “Reign Over Me,” which Mr. Sandler intended to promote on tonight’s Letterman show.

I wonder at the minds… lets turn tonights show over to the guest, and let him be the host. Generally David Letterman had been able to pull in some big names (and some little names) to host instead when he was out (actually fairly rare). Now mind, Adam Sandler is a pretty big name. But he isn’t know for being a host of anything. So I’ll be tuning in tonight to see how he does. So expect an update as I watch him tonight. And let me know (those in other time zones) what you think.

Edit: Adam sucked.  Mind he wasn’t totally terrible.  There was some funny moments.  But he was uncomfortable and it showed.  Plus he just couldn’t handle being behind the desk well.  But it’s a bit more then half way through and we’ve got Craig Fergusen next… maybe he’ll save CBS Late Night for tonight.
