Thanks ImageshackThe idea for the 2007 University of Illinois Girls of Engineering calendar was originally conceived by four students last year. The idea was to raise some money for charity, and to refute a stereotype that female engineering students aren’t beautiful.

Some people at U of I took offense to the calendar, saying it was demeaning to the female engineering students. The calendar was not sold in any campus bookstores. Karim (the editor) said he was contacted by a school lawyer about the use of “U of I,” so they agreed to remove it from the Web site www.girlsofengineering.com.

Thanks ImageshackThe models chosen for the project are current and former engineering students. Karim says they’ve only started making money on the project last week.

Personally, maybe because I’m a guy and therefore must be sexist, I don’t really find much wrong with the calender. Its similar in fare to the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Calender. There may be suggested nudity, but no actual. The girls are a mix of possible beauty queen and just pretty. And it does break the stereotypes.  After all I’m sure a lot of guys have thought Engineering students and beauty didn’t mix.  It may of been wrong, but they’ve thought it.
