FUBAR: Your DIY Bloopers
Note that in the following stories, I’m only using first names, in an attempt to protect the guilty here. While I’ve cleaned up grammar and typos, I’ve really tried to retain the tone of each story, as it was presented. I’ve added comments in italics, so you can tell when it’s me adding my own remarks. If you read this, and recognize your story, then rest assured that I’ve not shared your contact information with anyone, especially bosses, spouses or other people who really don’t need to know…Selmir wrote in with this story:
While replacing a failed hard drive on a system, I noticed that the power supply fan wasn’t running. Being a responsible person, I decided to replace the power supply as well. Feeling good about what I have accomplished, I took the PC back to its original location. I Connected the cables, pressed the power button—beautiful, it’s booting up. A few seconds later white smoke started to come out of the back of the PC. Sure enough, the power supply was fried; you could smell it even twenty feet away. At that particular location the voltage was 220V, not the standard 115V, and I forgot to reset the power supply. Luckily, nothing else was damaged aside from the smoking power supply.
I know I’ve done stupid things like fight a computer for hours before realizing the reason I was having so many issues was a loose floppy drive cable. Curse floppy drives!
Read through… enjoy the humorous stories, and realize that they could be yours. Building and working on PCs can be very easy, it’s the Whoops I didn’t think about that, that will make you go duh.
