OK… Digg v3 went live, but what are we getting?
Looking at the interface things seem ok, but as has been commented numerous times in this thread there are issues:
- Fixed width doesn’t always work.
The site now uses fixed width so on large monitors you end up with huge spaces on each side… and small text in the middle which brings us to our next point - Um font sizes guys?
The default font sizes work ok for me in comments but the font size adjustment scale thingy isn’t around any more to fix it for those who like it smaller or larger. Plus the comment box font size is like -1 or something. Very small and hard to read. The size int eh blog this link boxes are MUCH nicer. - Speaking of missing things, where is the ability to edited comments?
It’s bad enough they hadn’t added nested comments (though that may make it a bit too much like slashdot) but they also lie to you and say you can edit comments for 3 minutes… but don’t give you the ability. Broken? I hope that’s all it is. - The menu bar…
OK… I like all the options, and the power it gives, but having it on the left is sorta… I wouldn’t mind an option. Plus the fact they need to sign on to see nested areas… well I was expecting that. After seeing so many comments about the low percentage that actually bother to register… you had ot know it was coming. - The profile gadgets are great. The ability to see the expanded information is nice.
- The Bottom bar actually has real information… what the hell!?!?!?
- The About us is cutsy and nice… the one thought I had was that it’d be nice if someone looking at another users profile saw the information that way for non-workers. I like how it’s laid out… somewhat.
- The speed… right now it’s sorta sluggish… but we’ll have to see how much is related to new site… and how much is the new design.
Over all I’d give it a strong 80% but I’m expecting some changes… They’ve adjusted before when things did come out quite right.
Tech Crunch did a great write-up on the new Digg v3.
Edit: it didn’t take long for a number of people to come up with some scripts to fix some of the more major issues: http://digg.com/design/Digg_V3_with_Right_Hand_Menu
